Certificate in First Line Management - awarded by The Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM)
How will the participants be assessed?

International Management Qualifications are Centre assessed using Standard criteria – with ILM verification taking place in THRDGLs office in Nottingham.

See Assessment Forms – Appendix 3, 4 & 6.

a) learning hours = 160 full – 34 introduction. Tutor’s will amalgamate the workshop hours (from the attendance register) with the system generated CPD hours displayed in the ‘Personal Records - Record CPD Hours’ – review sessions do not qualify.

b1) 10 work based assignments (full certificate – see NB below for the IMQ and Introduction Certificate) – if the pre-set ILM WBA’s are used – these are attached to each eprogramme session. In the alternative 5 customised assignments may be preferred. One oral presentation to be included.

NB8:
The pre-set ILM WBAs each consists of circa 1 hours work and 600 words

NB9:
Customized WBA’s need ILM approval. They should set realistic, clearly defined work-based tasks, using live issues and MUST clearly indicate the learning outcomes that are being assessed, from at least four segments within the module(s). Each to take 2 hours and be circa 1200 words. These learning outcomes will form the basis of the assessment criteria

NB10:
One group generated WBA is acceptable provided that there is a clear means of identifying the contributions of individual learners for assessment purposes. This may be done by the group maintaining records of each individual’s contributions as the work progresses.

Written tutor feedback (supported by oral feedback where time permits during workshops) will be provided using either of the two assessment forms attached – see Appendix 3 – or a form design of the client’s choosing – i.e. whatever is judged fit for purpose.

NB11:
For the introduction certificate - one WBA is required = external assessed for framework courses – internally assessed for standard.

NB12:
For the IMQ – 4 WBA’s consisting of circa 1200 words each and based on a pair of modules is required – in addition to an oral presentation.

b2) 1 oral work based assignment – full only – this is NOT additional to the WBA’s identified above – IMQ excepted. The presentation will be assessed on the last workshop day or for distant learning from video.

The presentation should be in support of the candidates Summative Personal Development Record or provide explanation of how learning derived from the programme has been applied in the workplace, and the positive outcomes of this.

Subject knowledge should be clearly demonstrated, together with appropriate communication skills, and an ability to select relevant material and present it effectively

The presentation should last approximately 10 - 15 minutes. Written outline notes, cue cards or visual aids must be available to the External Verifier to evidence the candidate’s planning and preparation processes.

Candidates are required to achieve a minimum of half the available marks against each of the following criteria:
Select relevant information prior to briefing/presenting
(15 marks)

Plan and prepare an effective briefing/presentation (30 marks)
Conduct effective team briefing/presentation (40 marks)
Use appropriate communication methods for checking understanding (15 marks)

c) a project of not less than 2000 words – full only (externally assessed for framework courses).

NB13:
A project guideline is attached to the last eprogramme session.

d) reflective learning – full only - participants must complete 4 PDP’s achieve via 2 forms Customise Plan and Record CPD Hours (internally assessed for both standard and framework).
These forms are accessed online via Personal Records – See Appendix 1 & 2.

e) summative personal development record – full and introduction (internally assessed for both standard and framework). It will normally be produced at the end of the programme, usually after submitting the Project for assessment, encapsulating the PDPs & CPDs completed during the programme (d above). See Appendix 5. The record should indicate:

  • main developmental achievements during the programme
  • how these have been applied in the workplace, and feedback obtained from colleagues and managers on the outcomes
  • analysis of current personal strengths and shortcomings in own job role
  • priorities for own further development
  • proposed actions to meet the development need(s) identified, including own preferred learning style, timescale and resource implications of their plans

The Centre is required to assess the Summative Personal Development Record using the following criteria: The candidate is able to . . .

  • identify the requirements of their own job role (15 marks)
  • assess own skills in relation to their job role (20 marks)
  • obtain feedback on performance and use it constructively (15 marks)
  • identify own relevant development needs (20 marks)
  • recognise alternative learning styles and select their preferred style (5 marks)
  • take ownership for self development (25 marks)

f) meet external verifier – full only – for both standard and framework (but not relevant for International Management Qualifications). For this assessment component the External Verifier will meet with a minimum group of 5 participants.

NB14:
An EV meeting guideline is attached to the last eprogramme session.

Whilst the Summative Personal Development Records will provide a focus for the meeting, it will not be confined to these, but will range across discussion of the value of the programme in general terms.
As a time guide, for a group of 10 participants the meeting would normally be expected to take between 60 and 90 minutes.

Copies of participants’ written Summative Personal Development Records must be with the External Verifier at least two weeks prior to the date of the meeting, together with all other results and samples of assessed work as required by the External Verifier.

Each participant will be required to take an active part in the meeting.

The assessment criteria are as follows:

  • Speak clearly in a manner appropriate to the subject, purpose and situation
  • Keep to the subject, and structure the input to allow listeners to follow the contribution
  • Make clear and relevant contributions to the discussion, to move it forward
  • Listen and respond appropriately to what others say

g) online knowledge verification tests - Effective team leadership is best underpinned by sound knowledge, and this forms the rationale for this optional self test component.

h) learning segments – the tutor will analyse successfully completed ebriefings for segment compliance.
