Foundation course for trainers

This programme helps those new to training to make an effective contribution to the training and development of others in a practical and systematic way. It gives trainers the basic skills and knowledge needed as a foundation on which they can later develop the specialist skills of identifying training needs, designing, delivering and evaluating quality learning and training interventions.

All those who are required to conduct off- or on-the-job training, whether on a full-time or part-time basis, in industry, commerce, private or public sector. For newly-appointed professional trainers, this module can be regarded as a foundation course from which to progress to higher training qualifications. Familiarity with PowerPoint is an advantage but not essential.

By the end of the module, participants will be able to:

  • write objectives for a learning session
  • draw on learning theory when designing a training session or other learning event
  • prepare and deliver a short training session
  • use a range of materials to support the learning process
  • give constructive feedback based on their own observations
  • describe the scope of e-learning possibilities
  • make reasoned decisions on when to use e-learning either on its own or in combination with other methods
  • list the alternative ways in which e-learning can be resourced and managed

1. Introduction to training and learning

  • What is training? Why train?
  • relating training to the business and your role as a trainer

2. How people learn

  • learning styles
  • memory and retention

3. Objectives and outcomes

  • why they are useful
  • writing well-formed objectives

4. Identifying a range of methods
to assist learning from courses to reading, from e-learning to workshops.

DAY 2

1. Systematic approach to training delivery

  • preparation and research
  • questioning, listening, non-verbal communication
  • preparing and using supporting visuals
  • training materials and equipment including electronic projection, camera and video
  • observation, feedback and supporting the learner

2. Preparation of practical training sessions.

DAY 3

1. Delivery of individual practical sessions

  • practical delivery experience
  • observation, feedback and review

2. Introduction to managing discussions

  • purpose, content and how to prepare
  • dealing with challenging situations

3. Preparation of practical discussion sessions.
